If the crawl had been included, but with Giacchino's alternative theme, would that have been too jarring? Would both crawl and John Williams' theme have needed to be present to make it work? Or could the crawl have existed without the overly-familiar music?Ī crawl with any other music would be monumentally retarded. My initial thinking was that it really missed the opening crawl, but after reading what the Mutant just wrote, I'm happy to have my mind changed. I don't imagine sitting through it again any time soon. I was impressed by the filmmaking and quite enjoyed the actual end mission, but my lack of involvement for the characters really turned me off this film. But it has exceeded just about everyone's expectations and deepened our relationship with the overall story. If Rogue One wasn't up to the standards of the previous movies, or didn't dovetail with the saga as brilliantly as it does, I wouldn't be craving a crawl. It is the bell we hear in the Star Wars version of the Pavlov's dog experiment. Rogue One, as much as I love it to pieces, starts with the equivalent of a peep, depriving us of that jolt of John Williams java. It is an instant catalyst for getting the adrenaline pumping. The opening fanfare and crawl carry enormous-ENORMOUS-emotional weight in these movies. We've had that crawl on all seven films thus far, isn't it time for something at least a littler different?
